The day started off like any other. I was sipping on a hot cup of my favorite saffron chai, chatting with my manager for a bit, discussing a few action items. Except on this particular day, I found myself scratching my head a lot. I was going through writer’s block. I had no idea what I was going to blog about. So I decided to move on to another task, hoping inspiration would eventually come to me. A while later, big Juan, one of our customer service reps, came around the corner with a huge grin on his face and started shaking his head as he grabbed some skittles out of my candy jar. Of course, I couldn’t resist asking him what was up. He started laughing, and made a remark about how some of his customers cancel their trips for the most outrageous of reasons. And that’s when it got me thinking – what are some of the wackiest reasons people cancel their trips using their Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance benefit? Since customer service reps obviously had access to the juicy details that we didn’t, I had Juan sit down and give me the best of the best. So here they are for you to enjoy: 3 trip insurance cancel for any reason stories which will have you rolling on the floor laughing!
The Football Fanatic
Sports are enjoyed throughout the world. I’m sure we can all agree on that. But whether people would actually give up a pre-planned exotic vacation in order to attend a sporting event is a bit more dubious. However, for one particular customer – who, for the sake of this story, we’ll name Martin – this wasn’t the case. Juan started laughing as he recounted this situation he’d had with Martin.
Martin had called Juan one day asking to upgrade his policy for a trip to Machu Picchu, Peru to the Cancel for Any Reason benefit. “I thought he might’ve been just scared of traveling last minute or something and wanted coverage, but *laughs*, no,” Juan recalls. Apparently, Martin had known that his alma mater would be playing college football around that time, and in the event they made it to the playoffs, he was going to opt out of his exotic South American voyage in order to watch his alma mater play.
As fate would have it, they did make it into the playoffs, and Martin cancelled his trip to Machu Picchu. When he filed his claim, he actually got some of his trip cost back – 75%, to be exact!
The Concerned Mother
It was a sunny morning when Juan received a call from a woman. We’ll call her Martha. Martha had recently booked a trip to Europe, and was looking to purchase an insurance policy that would suit her needs. Part of consulting with a prospective customer is getting a feel for the customer’s lifestyle and identifying any aspects about them that may affect their plan recommendations.
Later on in the conversation, the woman mentioned that she’d like to upgrade to Cancel for Any Reason because she “couldn’t leave her babies” if they were to fall sick. At this point, Juan was puzzled. After all, if an insured or someone under their policy, such as their children for example, has fallen ill prior to a trip, this would typically be a reason that’s covered by most regular trip cancellation benefits. “Ma’am, you don’t need to upgrade to Cancel for Any Reason if you’re worried about your babies getting sick. Your trip cancellation should take care of that for you,” he remembers having said.
“Oh, no, no.” Martha explained. “These are my Chihuahuas I'm talking about. They’re my babies.” Juan remembers sheepishly grinning to himself and realizing Martha was right, and that the Cancel for Any Reason benefit was probably a good choice for her.
The Bickering Spouses
Sometimes, you don’t even anticipate cancelling a trip. You’re looking forward to an amazing vacation with your loved ones and the thought of cancelling isn’t even on your radar. But, as someone who likes to take extra precautions, you decide to upgrade to Cancel for Any Reason, because, why not?
And this is exactly what happened to a customer who we’ll call Dave. Dave upgraded his policy to include the Cancel for Any Reason benefit, just in case. He wasn’t anticipating anything happening that would cause him to cancel his trip. However, just two weeks prior to his trip, WWIII broke out at his home between him and his wife. Juan recalls getting a phone call from a fuming Dave, as he proceeded to cancel his trip. “Juan, there’s no way in hell I’m going on a 7-day cruise with this woman,” he’d said.
And alas, he didn’t go on that 7-day cruise with his wife. But he filed a claim for his cancelled trip and was able to get close to 75% of his coverage back. Why? Because he had upgraded to Cancel for Any Reason on a whim months earlier.
You never know what’s going to happen in life. Situations may arise that make traveling impossible. Or, you may simply feel like not going last minute for no particular reason. Either way, getting covered for those reasons, as grave or as silly as they may be, is one of the luxuries of upgrading to Cancel for Any Reason. So think about it as you book your next trip!
