There are a number of reasons for a Memorial Day Weekend Getaway. It’s the official start of summer, a day off of work, and most importantly a day to remember our military men and women. If you’re looking to travel over this upcoming long weekend, we have three top spots that are sure to have you enjoying the holiday weekend.
1) Washington D.C.
There are a number of reasons why heading to the nation’s capital over Memorial Day weekend is a must. Following the tourism boom in April for the National Cherry Blossom Festival, hotel rates tend to drop quite a bit. Temperatures in late May tend to be ideal, too since the notorious humidity sets in during mid-summer making outdoor Memorial Day weekend activities more pleasant. Activities over this upcoming Memorial Day weekend include the National Memorial Day Parade, and the annual Memorial Day Concert which takes place Sunday, May 25 at 8 p.m.In addition to the annual parade and concert, several people flock to Arlington National Cemetery, and venture through a number of incredible museums over this weekend, too.
2) New York City, New York
There are a variety of events that take place in New York City on a monthly basis, but especially Memorial Day weekend. A popular event, now in its 27th year is Fleet Week. Fleet Week offers visitors the chance to tour ships docked in Manhattan and Staten Island, see military demonstrations and meet men and women who are currently serving in the U.S. Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. The week long celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984. The Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade is a must for families and is also considered the oldest continuously Memorial Day parade.
