How to Become Eligible For a Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusion Waiver
March 17, 2017
Travel insurance provides benefits to help protect your travel investment, whether it’s compensating for lost time, luggage, or the inability to attend the trip due to an unforeseen emergency. Many travel insurance policies include a pre-existing conditions exclusion. If you have a chronic health condition, this could impact your travel plans and potentially impede you from getting the coverage that you need.
Because many travelers have pre-existing conditions, travel insurance companies now offer a pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver. This waiver, as the name suggests, waives the exclusion on many chronic, but well-managed health conditions. However, there are specific requirements that travelers need to meet in order to be eligible for this benefit. What are some of the most common eligibility requirements? Let’s find out!
Purchase Your Policy Early!
Some policies specify that you must purchase your travel insurance policy anywhere within 10 to 30 days of making your initial deposit on your trip to be eligible for the pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver
In our company’s case, if you purchase the Travel Insurance Select Plus or Elite Plans within 21 days of your initial trip deposit/payment and insure 100% of your trip cost, the pre-existing conditions exclusion is waived.
If you purchase any one of our Trip Care Complete Plans within 14 days of your initial trip deposit, as well as insure 100% of your trip cost, the pre-existing conditions exclusion is waived.
Be Medically Stable on Date of Purchase
Individuals may try to purchase an insurance policy only when complications arise. As convenient as that might be, that’s not how it works. You need to be well when you purchase a travel insurance policy.
Insure Your Entire Trip
Many travel insurance companies also require that you insure 100% of your trip cost in order for travelers to be eligible for the pre-existing condition waiver.
Be sure to accurately estimate your trip cost. Always give yourself ample cushion for your estimate and round up if need be. If you underestimate your trip cost, you could potentially be disqualified from getting the pre-existing conditions exclusion waiver.
Each travel policy is different. Some may have shorter windows when you purchase your travel insurance policy, while others may have more flexible regulations regarding how much of your trip you need to insure in order to be eligible for the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver. It’s important to reach out to the company and ask any questions you may have about the schedule of benefits.
We hope we’ve provided some important information about the pre-existing condition waiver.
